Pesticides Awareness Corner in Secondary Schools Award cermony

The Pesticides and Toxic Chemicals Control Board recently concluded its Pesticide Awareness Programme in Secondary Schools with an Awards Ceremony held on the 31st October, 2012.  This year’s program targeted 12 selected schools in six administrative regions, namely 2, 3,4,5,6 and 10.

Schools were tasked with establishing a Pesticides Awareness Corner in their schools, which is expected to provide a wealth of information to all students about the Board as well as pesticides, there use, hazards, benefits etc. Materials to develop the corners were provided by the Board, with schools expecting to add their own bit of creativity.Read more

 

Pesticides Awareness Week 2012, 21st - 27th October

The Ministry of Agriculture, Pesticides and Toxic Chemicals Control Board continued its public awareness raising campaign with the observation of “Pesticides Awareness Week” during Agriculture Month 2012. The Board which monitors the import, distribution, vending, use, storage and disposal of pesticides in Guyana carried out a number of activities during the week to raise awareness about this unique group of chemicals.Read more

 

National Chemical Profile of Guyana

In view of the recognition by the Government of Guyana of the essential need for acceptable regulatory management of chemicals in Guyana, the Pesticides and Toxic Chemicals Control Board (PTCCB) has developed this National Chemicals Management Profile (NCMP) to guide the importation, storage, trade, usage by the diverse spectrum of end users. 

 

This document has been compiled through a consultative approach led by the PTCCB and involving pertinent local public and private sector agencies and relevant overseas based regional and international organizations which are directly involved in chemical management and usage and monitoring.

Illegal pesticides seized during Pesticide Board's Inspection and enforcement exercises

The Pesticides and Toxic Chemicals Control Board of the Ministry of Agriculture, Inspection and Enforcement Unit recently conducted a series of inspections and seizure exercises countrywide which resulted in the confiscation of significant quantities of illegal and unregistered Household and Agriculture Pesticides Products. These seizures are in keeping with the Board mandates for eradicating the importation, sale and use of illegal pesticides. In keeping with the Pesticides and Toxic Chemicals Control Regulations 2004 (No. 8 of 2004) all pesticides imported, sold and used in Guyana must be registered by the Board. All products confiscated during these operations were not registered by the Board. In addition, the labeling standard does not comply with Regulation requirements. Over four (4) million dollars of illegal agricultural pesticides were confiscated along with numerous illegal household use products for the past two months. The Board wishes to re-emphasize that all pesticides are poisons, which pose high risks to human health and the environment. Read more

 

 

THE INTER-AMERICAN DEVELOPMENT BANK AND PESTICIDES AND TOXIC CHEMICALS LABORATORY (PTCL)

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) through its Agriculture Export Diversification Programme under the component aimed at strengthening and consolidating agriculture health and food safety services in Guyana has allocated funding for the development of the PTCL. The PTCL intends to use this money to enhance both its quality and residual analyses capabilities. The desired equipment and materials were already presented to the programme’s executing agency and the process of procurement has begun.

One of the major pieces of equipment to be acquired is a High Performance Liquid Chromatograph (HPLC), which would be used to identify and quantify pesticide residues. It is a very powerful analytical tool that is able to detect very small concentrations and a wide variety of chemical compounds. This would be important not only to safeguard consumer health but also to facilitate the trade requirements of export markets. Read more

Public Awareness News & Development

The Board commenced its training programme for the year 2010. The programme envisaged a target audience of 1500 persons taking from the agriculture growing communities across the country. The trainings targeted farmers and farmhands within the sugar, rice and other crops sectors in regions 2,3,4,5,6 and 10. Participants were exposed to the safe techniques of handling, transporting, storing, spraying and disposal of Pesticides.

 

The trainings were conducted in conjunction with Ministry of Agriculture Extension Department, Crops Development Support Services, National Agricultural Research Institute, Guyana Rice Development Board and Guyana Marketing Corporation with representatives from these agencies making informed presentations relating to their organizations.   • Public Awareness News & Development

The Pesticides and Toxic Chemicals Control Board commenced its training programme for the year 2009 during the month of January. The objectives of the training were to enlighten and demonstrate to participants across the country the role of the Board as it relates to pesticides in Guyana and the safe and effective use and management of pesticides.

 

  • Coordinating Group of Pesticides Control Boards Meeting

  • Guyana will be hosting the 14th Meeting of the Coordinating Group of Pesticides Control Boards of the Caribbean, which will be held on 22nd – 26th June, 2009 at the Buddy’s Princess Hotel. This is the first meeting hosted by Guyana who became a member of the Group (CGPC) in 2001.

  • Guyana Accedes to the Rotterdam and Stockholm Convention. Guyana acceded to two more international chemical conventions, namely, the Rotterdam Convention on the Prior Informed Consent Procedure for Certain Hazardous Chemicals and Pesticides in International Trade and the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants.

  • Licensing of Pest Control Operators The Pesticides and Toxic Chemicals Control Board will commence licensing Pest Control Operators from the 1st January 2008. The first consultation with the operators was held on the 30th September 2008.

  • Guyana to Host Regional Pesticide Meeting Guyana has informed the secretariat of the Coordinating Group of Pesticide Control Board of the Caribbean (CGPC) of their intention to host the 14th meeting in June 2009. This will be the first meeting hosted by Guyana who became a member of the Group in 2001

  • Laboratory Development under the Agricultural Diversification Programme The Pesticides and Toxic Chemicals Laboratory will be expanded with funding from the Inter-American Development Bank under the Agricultural Diversification Programme for a pesticide residue laboratory.
